KID was founded by Linda Ginzel and Boaz Keysar, parents to Danny Keysar. Danny died in 1998, months shy of his second birthday. He was at child care, in a portable crib that was poorly designed, inadequately tested, and ultimately recalled. To date, 19 children have died in cribs of similarly faulty design. Unfortunately, portable cribs are just one of the myriad children's products that may prove to be dangerous. KID is Danny’s legacy and our work honors his memory and the memory of all victims of unsafe children's products.

 KID's goal is a world where every child can grow up safely. KID has a three-pronged approach to achieving this goal:

1) Advocating for strong safety standards and independent testing before any product reaches store shelves and for effective recalls to remove dangerous products from use;

2) Connecting with parents and caregivers so they are informed and able to take proactive steps to protect children from unsafe products;

3) Training the next generation of engineers to incorporate safety throughout the design process, keeping the latest safety standards and end users in mind.

KID is the only nonprofit organization in the US that focuses solely on children's product safety. As a result of our efforts, we have made impressive gains in changing the product safety system, influencing future engineers, and educating parents, caregivers, professionals as well as the general public.

KID's signature programs include Safe from the Start, an outreach program to parents and caregivers; the Debby Sayah Grandparent Outreach Program to provide safety information to grandparents and Teach Early Safety Testing (TEST), an initiative to integrate design safety into the undergraduate engineering curriculum so that future designers will address potential hazards before products come to market.
