In addition to energizing East Harlem children with five afternoons of outdoor exercise in their neighborhood, Concrete Safaris is the only non-profit agency in New York City specifically providing health-based programming and materials for children to develop gardens within the NYC Housing Authority developments where they live. In Concrete Safaris’ Afterschool, children as young as 7-years-old study the process of land-use policy change. They learn how to ask for the land in their housing project as well as the process of obtaining use of the space. Children are active in every stage of garden installation. They learn firsthand how bureaucratic systems work and are shaped alongside Concrete Safaris’ staff, the nation’s largest public housing authority, their school or community center, and families and neighbors committed to their health.
