Founded in the wake of the 2010 earthquake, EqualHealth (formerly Physicians for Haiti) was created with the goal of maintaining a sustained engagement in the rebuilding process helping Haiti to “build back better” by laying the foundation for an effective medical education system. Since then, Physicians for Haiti has been dedicated to providing Haitian health professionals with the training and tools they need to take the best possible care of their patients. Hundreds of our Haitian colleagues have participated in our medical education, leadership training, and professional development programs to date. From running the largest and longest-standing medical education conference in Haiti each year to launching an innovative Teach the Teacher program to train residency directors, we respond to the needs expressed by our Haitian partners and work with them to develop each of our programs. We focus on supporting the efforts of our Haitian colleagues rather than replacing them, and our long-term vision is of our work being carried forward by the Haitian medical community itself. 

EqualHealth currently works at hospitals, clinics, and medical schools across the country to help train and equip medical professionals and students to be the most effective clinicians they can be. Our Visiting Professor program matches international experts with clinics and schools who request them for short 1-3 week courses. Our Social Medicine Course works with both Haitian and international medical students to build a foundation in the fundamentals of social medicine, and to inspire the next generation of physicians to treat patients in a manner that is effective within their sociocultural context. For more seasoned medical professionals, we offer conference support to attend international medical education conferences, online training modules adapted to a Haitian setting, and Pataje Sante--a leadership development program for all levels of medical staff. Our newest program, Teach the Teacher, works to address Haiti’s shortage of trained clinical educators by offering hospital-based instruction in teaching principles and the fundamentals of adult learning.  In Boston, we offer low-cost Haitian Creole classes to help US clinicians work more effectively with their Haitian patients.

All of our work reflects our core strategy: to be a leader in improving postgraduate medical education and leadership development in Haiti by developing targeted, interactive medical education resources, expanding access to cutting-edge medical information and consultation services, and fostering bidirectional exchange with our Haitian partners.
