Institute of Women Today
The mission of Institute of Women Today is to provide transitional housing for homeless women, children, and families, and to provide experiences that empower, mentor and support persons experiencing homelessness and the broader community so that all
The Institute of Women Today was started in 1974 by Sister Margaret Traxler and a group of interfaith women to advocate on women's issues. For many years, the group presented workshops and trainings on legal and social issues throughout the country and advocated for equal rights in employment, education, and many other areas. As laws improved, the group changed course to address a looming social problem of great magnitude--homeless women. Instead of solely advocating on issues, Sr. Margaret and the board decided that they would provide direct service to those in need. In 1989, IWT opened its first women's shelter in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago. Women of all ages and all walks of life have entered Maria Shelter and found comfort, safety and support. But they have also developed the skills and support systems necessary to become self sufficient and remain independent. Today, IWT operates not only Maria Shelter, but a second shelter called "BELIEVE." Believe houses only families, a growing demographic of the homeless population. On average, between 60 and 70% of our residents are successfully transitioned into housing. In addition to providing food and shelter, IWT also offers residents a wide variety of programs and services including case management, health services and programs, art and music therapy, yoga, tutoring, parenting classes, counseling and referrals to many job training and other important services. In an effort to improve the community that often has little access to vital services, IWT also operates a senior center at its Englewood location. Many of its programs are collaborations with Maria Shelter residents for a truly inter-generational approach.
