Lucky 13 Rescue is a federal 501(c)3 non-profit rescue founded in Drexel, Missouri in August 2016 and has recently moved to the Kansas City metro area, serving both sides of the state line. Lucky 13 Rescue is an organization dedicated to the rescue and aid of homeless and neglected dogs in the Kansas City metro and surrounding rural areas. We do not limit our efforts to a specific breed, but rather strive to assist any dog that is facing neglect, homelessness, abuse or death. Our ultimate goal is to rehabilitate each canine in our care through placement in loving foster homes until they can be carefully matched with adoptive families. We are a foster home based rescue as we do not have a facility to intake dogs on the spot. All of our rescue dogs are provided with medical attention and behavioral rehabilitation. They will be adopted into their forever home spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative. In the last year, we’ve been able to rescue 421 dogs. They’ve been dogs that were homeless, surrendered to rural animal controls, and who came from hoarding cases. These dogs have been so wonderful to rehabilitate into pets, but not without challenges, both medically and behaviorally. We have had 10 dogs who tested positive for heartworms, which we spent roughly $600 per dog to treat. We have also spent over $5,000 on training where some of our more behaviorally challenging dogs have learned a variety of things that will help them become adoptable. Because of this, we’ve been able to adopt healthy and amazing dogs with a low return rate due to medical or behavioral challenges.
