The Plainfield Riverfront Foundation was formed in late 2009 to promote public awareness and fundraising to develop the Plainfield Riverfront Master Plan. This ambitious plan was established as a partnership between the Village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Park District to create a riverfront and riverwalk along a two-mile stretch of the DuPage River centered in downtown Plainfield. The Riverfront will provide extensive recreation opportunities, enhanced views and access to the Dupage River, and opportunities for cultural and entertainment events to be hosted for the Plainfield community.

The planned Plainfield Riverfront encompasses what was once Electric Park. In the early 1900's, Electric Park was developed by the streetcar company as an attraction to boost ridership on the streetcar line that connected Aurora and Joliet via Plainfield. Electric Park boasted swimming, boating, and a 100-step toboggan slide into the DuPage River, as well as a dance hall, auditorium, sunken gardens and extensive pathways. Some 70 cottages were available for rent by the day, week, or season. Electric Park was a vacation destination for people to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the fresh air and endless activities of Electric Park. The advent of the automobile and the decline of the streetcar system lead to Electric Park’s demise in the 1920’s.

Plainfield’s current Riverfront efforts will honor the significant role Electric Park plays in Plainfield’s history, while also providing modern amenities. The first phase planned for development is south of Lockport Street on the west side of the DuPage River. The Plainfield Riverfront Foundation is currently seeking donations and pursuing grants to fund the initial phase of development.
